This course is one credit. What it opens is wider than most students expect, and narrower than the phrase “get into tech” suggests. Here is the honest map.

Next, while you are still here

  • ICS4U in Grade 12 — the direct continuation: bigger programs, data structures, algorithm efficiency, object-oriented design.
  • Cooperative education — a real workplace for credits, and the single best way to find out whether you like the work before you pay tuition for it.
  • A Specialist High Skills Major in Information and Communications Technology, if your school offers one: a bundle of credits, certifications, and co-op focused on the sector.
  • The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program, for the trades side of computing — network cabling, electronics, and related trades that start earning while training.
  • Clubs and contests — robotics, game jams, hackathons, and the Canadian Computing Competition. Two evenings a month, and a portfolio by June.

Ontario’s colleges and universities publish entrance requirements plainly, and the requirement for computer science degrees is usually Grade 12 mathematics rather than Grade 12 computer science. Check the specific programs, not the general advice — including this page’s.

Work that does not look like “programmer”

Software touches everything, so the jobs do too: quality assurance, technical writing, IT support, systems administration, database administration, data analysis, UX research and design, security analysis, technical sales, teaching, and every one of the collaborative fields in Where the Field Is Going. Several of these pay well, hire steadily, and never require you to write a compiler.

The habits that decide it

The Ministry’s Essential Skills list — reading, document use, numeracy, writing, oral communication, working with others, thinking, computer use, and continuous learning — sounds like a poster until you watch a project fail. The ones that decide who is useful in this field:

  • Reading — documentation, error messages, and other people’s code, which is most of the job.
  • Writing — a usage note somebody can follow, and a status update somebody can act on.
  • Thinking and problem solving — narrowing a fault instead of guessing at it.
  • Working with others — asking a good question, taking a review without flinching, saying early that you are stuck.
  • Continuous learning — the specific tools in this course will be replaced; the ability to pick up the replacement will not.

If the field does not look like you

Several organisations exist specifically to open computing to students who are under-represented in it — girls and young women, Black and Indigenous youth, students with disabilities, and students in rural, northern, and remote communities. Actua’s network of university- and college-based programs, Canada Learning Code, Hackergal, and Black Boys Code all run events across the country, many of them free or online. Who Gets to Build is where we discuss why this matters; the practical point here is narrower and worth saying plainly: these are open to you, and the application is usually a form and a date.
